No electric stuck in parking lot...

Post by fusioncruiser » Mon 12 Nov , 2012 3:26 pm

I had to stop at Costco. Truck was running fine.
Came out an jumped in truck but no lights. No power anything. No dome lights etc etc.
Turn key, nothing.
Tried jumpers and nothing.

Is there a single point of failure to the electrical other than at the starter? Those connections look fine.

Thanks

I hired a flatbed to come pick me up so now the truck is back at home but still no sign of power. Batteries both show full charge.

Any ideas?

I remember hearing about the fusible link but don't have much to go on for finding and testing that.

Ok so now I'm really confused... I went out to look for the fusible link and removed the breather tube that goes to the air filter and while wiggling it, the lights in the truck all came on (I guessing left them on when testing it earlier). So I thought I must have a bad connection someplace so I started wiggling every wire I could find around there but the lights aren't going out. So did a continuity test from positive batt post to the alternator connector bolt and it is good.

I assume that means I need to find the next possible single point of failure in that electrical line.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The first thing I'd do is remove all the battery cables and clean the terminals off and reinstall them. I think there's a big ground wire. Make sure it's clean on both ends. One side might bolt to the engine.

Batt cables where clean and tight but I cleaned them again just in case. Didn't seem to make a difference.

I am thinking that I need a wiring diagram that shows what cables are attached to the red terminal on the alternator. There appears to be 4 of them but I don't know where they all go to. I think one goes to the glow controller but I'm not 100% sure on that yet, will be back at it in a few hours.

Thanks

Still haven't found it, I can't find my shop manual cd to look up the wiring. I may have to trace the wires manually.

Thanks Chuck,
Mine is fixed now...

It was the connection on the alternator that has 3 wires attached to it.

I took it all off and dremel cleaned it, then put on dielectric grease to keep moisture out and reassembled it... Now its good as new.

Thanks!!
