Can't take out key...

Post by fusioncruiser » Mon 24 Dec , 2012 5:30 pm

So, I thought it was a neutral switch that was causing me to have trouble removing my key when I shut off the truck but after reading more threads I don't think that's correct.

Can anyone tell me if the "ignition lock cable" is more likely to be my problem?

I do have a neutral switch that I bought but never replaced but I don't want to go that route if it isn't the problem.

Thanks

some ideas:

1. Try turning your steering wheel side to side (it might be binding)
2. Move your shifter, make sure your not on a hill and nothing is binding
3. Could be your cylinder itself (try using a little WD-40 and tapping on it) then replace the Cylinder
4. Maybe just remove it and inspect it (photo attached)

Hope this helps

When it happens I can move the truck out of park without pressing the button on top of shifter.

I sounds like the cable is sticking.

Which cable is that? I have the manual with pics of the shifter etc but the only cable I see is the interlock cable and I don't see what can be adjusted or lubed.

Also of note... It seems to be worse when it's chilly out ( -25c ) or colder. I'm wondering if it could be moisture that is freezing up. I was going to spray some penetrating lube in to displace any moisture but wasn't sure where would be the best place to do that from.

Thanks!

ha-ha ... Nothing seems to work at that temp.

Hope this batch of pictures help locate the cable.

Try pushing on the cable and see if it allows you to remove the key.
must be some kind of adjustment. but i dont see it as well.

will the tab holding the cable bend?

if you need a new cable:

I have been going over those pages in the manual but I don't know what cable would cause it unless the interlock cable is tied to the ignition somehow. I don't see any cable running to the key area tho so I'm at a loss.

I sprayed pb blaster down I in and also on the thumb button and now I have my keys out but still not sure what is causing it.

I haven't pulled the shift cover to try manually working the interlock cable but I guess I could try that next time.

Still looking for ideas so shoot if you have one about this silly issue.

Thanks

Yup, tried in and out of gear and the tcase.

What I did that seems to have had an effect is the PB Blaster... I sprayed it everywhere that i could get it to flow down and then took it out to the airport today. I had it parked all day at -20c and it worked perfect.

So I dont know if it is just a lube thing or if I just got lucky today.

Ok, now I'm at a loss....

I had it working pretty good but it seems to be related to the button on the top of the shifter. I lubed it and it seemed better but sometimes when I stop the truck and put it in park, the button doesn't come up fully. Sometimes I can pull it up manually and then I can get the shifter to lock in park and take the keys out but other times I have to wait up to 5 minutes in Park before it will pop up enough to release the key.

Any ideas?

Thanks

My money is on the interlock cable.
Pull the cover from and spray some lube on it.
or
Maybe pull the linkage from the bottom, lift the shifter from the top and see if your interlock cable is the issue. its a tight area to work in, "but you can do it"

I have this problem occasionally... Wiggling the shifter while it is in the "P" position usually gets it done for me...

When I was shopping for my truck a few years ago, one of the trucks I looked at had the same problem, but much worse.

When I had it inspected, the service tech indicated that the shifter itself was worn. Only trouble is the shifter was a $700+ part 5 years ago... I can't imagine it's gotten cheaper :|

It is the shift lock cable causing this to be sure. Somewhere between the shifter and the column.
