chrisbenson's rig - 1998 Black HMCS

Post by chrisbenson » Thu 05 Apr , 2007 2:35 pm

Here's my rig that I got from an eBay auction in January of 2007. I flew down to Houston and drove it back to Raleigh, NC. I had a nail in the tire most of the way back but nothing a tap of the CTIS wouldn't fix. :D
I got rid of the side steps as soon as I got home. Next I put on the AMG wrap around brushguard. The Cepek rims and PJ's took forever to get on the truck due to the government ordering a ton of PJ's to send over to Iraq. I waited 7 weeks for the tires. They are a huge improment in the sand over the GSA's. They are also not as noisy on the road as I would have expected.

I've also had my brother (former car stereo/alarm installer) put on some various do-dads on the truck.
-Viper 5900 alarm with remote start - 1 mile range
-Dome light kill switch so we can keep the doors open at the beach and not worry about killing the batteries
-Foot petal headlight flasher (to flash the big rigs)
-Garmin GPS with external antenna
-Fix door actuators on barn doors and rear passenger door

Things that I want to put on the truck:
-Some kind of train/air horn
-Hydraulic winch up front
-Light bar (probably the rubber duck one)
-Rear tractor lights (mounted on the roof rack)
-Some kind of radio (CB/HAM..etc)

I'm sure I'll come up with more things as I start my wheeling career.

Thanks Chuck for hosting this site. It's a treasure trove of information.

No, it's not lifted. It's stock height. Of course that's where I live. How else can I afford this truck? haha  You should see my garage tent with the hydraulic lift in it. It was a bear to dig out all the sand to put the lift in.

ah ... you got all the goodies.

I almost like the rock rim look better. (however, Both ways look great)

it doesnt look like you need new tires "just yet"... whats the deal?
You got a big bonus at work or you got 2500.00 burning a hole in your pocket?

Wow! Huge improvement!

To me, nothing looks meaner than a black truck with black rock rims. I just put mine back on yesterday for a wheeling trip this weekend and I had forgotten how much I like the look.

Yeah, the rock rim look does look cool but I can only drive about 50mph with those things on. Serious manhole covers moving down the road. :D

It's true that I don't need tires just yet but I'm doing my homework up front so when the time comes I'll know which ones to get. I figured with my driving and the wear on them so far I'd probably need new ones before the winter. I like having some meat on my tires and not wear them down to the nubs. Wore down tires do no good in the mud or the sand. :D

Chris,

Your truck looks great...I think it would look better without the roofrack.....especially with that low lightbar!

Yeah.. actually I'd like to get a "closer to the roof" roof rack as well. This one came on the truck so there's other places to spend money on the truck at the moment before replacing something that's already there. :D The low lightbar is for some protection of the lights from branches when they come in at eyeball height. During the Michigan snow run this was the norm on some of the trails.. especially the one they call "car wash".
