if you could customize an H3 for off road....

Post by Pappy » Thu 29 Mar , 2007 10:58 am

what would you do to it? I am toying with the idea of outright buying my h3 after my lease is up, and I was wondering what you all thought would be sweet to add to it to make it a sweeter off road machine....

Are you still getting married?

That’s a-ok……. What I would do..

1. Roof Rack with lights(store fuel, shovel, ropes, tent, air mattress, cooler, extra spare tire, anything dirty that you don’t want inside and easy to retrieve)
2. Lift kit
3. 35’s
4. Winch
5. Snorkel
6. Rock Crawler front bumper with skid plate (help with approach angles)

“done”

I’m keeping my H3!

Ok, I was thinking definately the lift and the 35's (robby gordon's race h3 had 37s...looked completely bad donkey), and the winch. The snorkel and the rock crawler might be overkill for what i might be doing...at least for now. Roof rack is a great idea. What about power additions, like a supercharger? I don't think it would need one, but what about it?

What could I be expecting to pay for the lift, tires, and winch? Keep in mind, I would need it installed...I am tool illiterate! :(

I run with H3's all the time. Lifting one is a waste of time. They don't hold up to the additional stresses and are perfectly capable vehicles without one. My opinion may change if anybody ever makes a good lift but it hasn't happened yet.

My suggestions would be

*35's (no lift needed).

*Maybe some off-set rims for a slightly wider stance.

*Good under carriage protection

*a winch. (H20 makes an awesome brushguard/bumper/winch combo that is in it's own league).

A rear locker is a big advantage if you don't have one factory. Not sure what adding one would do to warranty - ask your dealer.

Your done! H3's set up like the above completed the rubicon trail in CA with minimal body damage. An extermely hard trail for anything but a trailered rock buggy.

If you want more toys a roof rack and lighting is nice.

Personally if I was in a lease I would wait for the 08 H3 alpha. It gets a V8 and cast iron front diff. (front diff is a weak point for the current H3's)

hmm...i have the off road package so i do have the locker and underbody protection. I am leasing now, but will probably be over my miles when I am done, so I am not sure if I shouldn't just buy at the end of the lease.

Can't wait to see the alphas though...

will deffinately take under advisement!

ok, still thinking about keeping the h3, and I starting to do more research, but I am not sure what I should be looking for in the way of "35"s. Could someone link me to what I am looking for? Am I right to say that the standard h3 comes with "32"s? If so, what is the 16.5 then? I am kinda confused, but that is probably from my lack of sleep...

I say the tires will be the 1st place to start.

They make a HUGE difference.

The Factory has 265/75/R16 (32")
and then
the option LT 285/75/R16 (33")

I put 315 (35's) Pro comp A/T
I had to crank up on my T barabout 1 turn, however it gave it a level "Lifted" look and i still kept my soft ride.

I realy like it now.......... Little Red H3 with BIG 35's rollin.

Everyone notice the change, I have had people stop me in parking lots and ask what size tire is that.

The last Hummer run i went on it did just fine. It has so much low end, the big 35's didnt matter.

I do notice at HWY speed some times it wont get into over drive. It has a lot of meat to roll.....

I have had them on the H3 for a year now. Glad i did it. No signs of wear (course the little H3 has no weight on the over size tires)

A/T's do great for me. Dont know if i would do mud tire or not.

Toss on some 35's, keep your old ones to turn in after the lease is up. This way they wont charge you for tires. -or- sell the factory tires on e-bay.... i did, it took 3 days to sell mine.

Hope this helps
