Another Hummer CB Install

I wanted a totally stock look that didn’t require any mounting brackets. I especially didn’t want to drill any holes in the Hummer.  I bought the COBRA 75wsxt for $90, a firestik 4’ antenna for $20 and a firestik side mount bracket which came with 18’ antenna cord ($20).  I chose the COBRA 75 wsxt because it doesn’t have the big “box” that most cb’s have. All the components are built into the handset microphone.  It only took 1.5 hours to install the whole thing.  You’ll also need a 2 parts from the local radio shack or car electronics store:  a bag of zip ties, and an automotive fuse panel splice connector.

Instructions:

  1. Remove the fuse panel cover on the lower dash & take out one of the fuses.
  2. Use the “automotive fuse panel connector” & push it in the fuse panel along with the fuse you just removed.
  3. Connect the red wire to the “automotive fuse panel connector”
  4. Unscrew the 4 screws that hold the kick panel on (just below the steering wheel) & pull it down a couple of inches.
  5. Connect the black wire to any ground (there are ground bolts on the left, just above the hood latch lever.
  6. Zip –tie the CB control box someplace under the dash out of the way & plug in the antenna wire & the CB handset.
  7. Route the CB handset & antenna to the right – stick the CB handset wire out of the space between the 2 dash trim pieces near the E-brake – no drilling.
  8. Pull up on the cup holder (it comes right out) & also loosen the 4 screws around the radio – pull out the radio gently & route the antenna wire behind the radio to the cup holder.
  9. Push the antenna down & out of the hole in the bottom of the doghouse where the heater hoses penetrate (put your hands through the cup-holder hole). There’s plenty of room.
  10. Go under the truck & pull the antenna wire on top of the left frame member.  Zip tie it wherever you can.  Route it to the rear bumper.
  11. Drill one ¼” and one 1/8” hole at your favorite location on the bumper.
  12. The antenna just screws onto the bumper & the antenna wire already has a connector on it.  (I think I’ll drill one more hole in the bumper to route the antenna wire THROUGH it vs. over the top of it as it currently is now.  (see photo).

I didn’t want to drill ANY holes in my dash, so I took out the upper left screw from the radio trim piece & slid the CB handset clip behind the trim so one of the holes lined up with the hole for the stereo trim.  I only have one screw holding it in, but it works fine & looks totally stock.
